A few weeks ago I locked myself out of my house while my husband was out of town, and had to pay $400 to have my deadbolt drilled…not too long before that we were out of town and our dog sitter locked herself out…once again, lock had to be drilled. This adds up, as you can imagine…both in time, stress and MONEY! Why we need it.
From pet sitters/walkers, house sitters, house cleaners, house guests, electricians/handymen, children who come home after school, babysitters/nannies…there are lots of people who may need to let themselves into the house either regularly or from time to time, and/or who could lose their key, and lock themselves out…it just makes so much sense to always be able to control your home’s lock remotely! We don’t currently have an AIRbnb but we’re in the process of updating our guest house to one, and the August Home Smart Lock Pro is the perfect solution to that too! Love it!
Installation.
My husband installed the August Home Smart Lock Pro himself. There is a simple installation video he watched and start to finish it took less than 30 minutes. The lock itself goes in over the existing deadbolt, and sits on the inside of the door — this means the exterior CAN still be unlocked by a key, and your keys don’t change.
Set up.
Setting up our August Home Smart Lock Pro with the app on the phone was easy. My husband did the initial set up on his phone and then sent me a text message invite. I was easily able to add it to my phone in less than 4 minutes. We can add anyone (or remove them) by adding or removing cell phone numbers and inviting them via text message. My 6-year old could use it easily, without a problem, it was so easy to use.
Safety.
I like the idea of being able to give our dog sitter access via her phone for a weekend or a week. She can access our house for the time period we need her here…and when she’s done dog sitting, we can turn it off. I can take the house key off my keychain. Whether I valet my car or go to the car wash…no more paranoia (even if its urban legend LOL) about keys getting duplicated. No lost keys or locksmiths because my husband can open the door for me even when he’s traveling. No duplicated keys scattered around with neighbors, housekeepers, kids, in the car, etc. The unit turns from the inside just like a traditional lock to open/lock manually…so no fire safety issue there and you don’t need to dredge your phone out at night to lock up your house…from the inside you simply turn the unit to unlock or lock it.
Technology and Safety.
And because its a mobile application, August Home can keep updating the software with the latest and greatest security features as they come out. Unlike something like, say, a key fob for a car…which once you take it home it just ages and doesn’t get updated…mobile applications can be updated for security features constantly. So I feel much more secure about it!

Now talking strictly convenience as a Mom. Lets keep it real about who’s carrying everything in from the
car. Backpacks? Me. Groceries? Me. Costco Haul? Me. Drycleaning? Me. Sports equipment? Me. And between hangry kids and ones who have to pee I get yelled at A LOT to get the door open LOL.
